My objective as an educator are to get students to think for themselves. I hope that every student that leaves my classroom gains a sense of self-worth and accomplishment. As an educator I believe it is my job to teach my students not only about the fundamentals of learning English but the fundamentals of learning about life experiences and how those experiences help you become successful in life. I hope to encourage my students to to make clear and concise decisions regarding anything they encounter in life. I don't want any student to feel as if my classroom is a dictatorship, meaning that everyone's opinions and views will be respected at all times and there is no tolerance for disrespect. I intend for my students understand that although I am not their friend they can always count on me to listen and attempt understand their point of view to the best of my abilities and that anything I do, I will do for their best interest. The most important aspect of my classroom environment will be respect and I will hold my students as responsible to be respectful as they would expect me to be towards them and encourage them to practice this with everyone they encounter whether it be inside or outside my classroom.
I also hope to facilitate their abilities in critical thinking, problem solving and group work. When I was in high school I can remember teachers who didn't take their jobs as educators seriously and their main focus, whatever it may have been wasn't their students. Another aspect that I see missing are the tools students need to be fully prepared for post-secondary education. Many students enter post-secondary students unequipped to face not only the work load but the requirements for doing research, thinking critically, and writing papers. Many educators focus on the bare minimum when it comes to preparing their students, its more about about testing and requirements than it is about valuable education and learning and I intend to change that with my approach to teaching. Through innovative ways such as connecting literature to their own life experiences and challenging their thoughts and views of the world I intend to engage the students thinking as well as their thought process for understanding and discussing literature.
The most rewarding thing about teaching is knowing that you had a hand in someones ability to learn. Teaching is one of the most important aspects of life without it how would we be encouraged to learn? I want to help students understand that what they think does matter and that they as an individual have a voice that should be heard. My goal is to dig out the critical thinking, creative, intelligent, individuals that this world has yet to discover. I want to make a difference in my students lives by becoming that lasting impression that validated their feelings as well as teaching how to facilitate their thoughts as well as their feelings. I believe Mark Twain said it best "the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great".
